SGA Cup cut off as venue goes dark

KOTA KINABALU: The af­ter­noon ses­sion of the open­ing day of the 17th SGA Cup was aban­doned due to dark­ness at the Sabah Golf and Coun­try Club (SGCC) yes­ter­day.

It was learnt that some matches in the Four­ball for­mat were ham­pered by poor vis­i­bil­ity, thus lead­ing to a pre­ma­ture end to the open­ing day of the tour­na­ment.

The af­fected matches will be played first thing in the morn­ing today, to be fol­lowed by the sec­ond day sched­ule.

The SGA Cup started off with the Four­some for­mat in the morn­ing yes­ter­day where ri­vals Sabah and Sarawak were tied at 3-3.

Hil­lary Tan and play­ing part­ner Fir­daus @ Diddy, Al­bright Chong and Christo­pher James as well as Jor­dan Mo­bi­john and Fa­z­ley Chua won their re­spec­tive matches.

Sarawak scored through the pair­ings of Alu Chin Leong/ Sam­sudin Malek, Aw Yong JJ/ Lee Ka Tung and Has­san Malek/Aziel Teo.

Mean­while, the sec­ond day sched­ule will see the golfers tee­ing first for the Four­ball for­mat and to be fol­lowed by the Four­some for­mat.

The fi­nal day of com­pe­ti­tion to­mor­row will see the In­di­vid­ual Match-Play pit­ting 12 play­ers from each sides.

For the record, hosts Sabah are chas­ing a hat­trick of wins af­ter hav­ing won the last two edi­tions of the ala-Ry­der Cup for­mat tour­na­ment in 2015 and 2016.

In fact, Sabah’s first hat­trick was achieved when they won from 2011 to 2013 while also win­ning in 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2015 and 2016.

Sarawak have won the tro­phies six times since 2003 at the San­dakan Golf and Coun­try Club while the rest were achieved when play­ing hosts in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2014.
