KOTA KINABALU: The afternoon session of the opening day of the 17th SGA Cup was abandoned due to darkness at the Sabah Golf and Country Club (SGCC) yesterday.

It was learnt that some matches in the Fourball format were hampered by poor visibility, thus leading to a premature end to the opening day of the tournament.

The affected matches will be played first thing in the morning today, to be followed by the second day schedule.

The SGA Cup started off with the Foursome format in the morning yesterday where rivals Sabah and Sarawak were tied at 3-3.

Hillary Tan and playing partner Firdaus @ Diddy, Albright Chong and Christopher James as well as Jordan Mobijohn and Fazley Chua won their respective matches.

Sarawak scored through the pairings of Alu Chin Leong/ Samsudin Malek, Aw Yong JJ/ Lee Ka Tung and Hassan Malek/Aziel Teo.

Meanwhile, the second day schedule will see the golfers teeing first for the Fourball format and to be followed by the Foursome format.

The final day of competition tomorrow will see the Individual Match-Play pitting 12 players from each sides.

For the record, hosts Sabah are chasing a hattrick of wins after having won the last two editions of the ala-Ryder Cup format tournament in 2015 and 2016.

In fact, Sabah’s first hattrick was achieved when they won from 2011 to 2013 while also winning in 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2015 and 2016.

Sarawak have won the trophies six times since 2003 at the Sandakan Golf and Country Club while the rest were achieved when playing hosts in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2014.
