Six jailed, one fined over syabu

KOTA KINABALU: Six men was jailed between three and 12 months while another man was fined RM5,000, in default, six months jail by the Magistrate’s Court here after they pleaded guilty to possessing syabu.

Senior assistant registrar Herlina Muse meted the jail sentences on Azmie Saiddin, Huzaifah Hassan, Hatta Lakdjuddin, Muliadi Tariba, Zahariman Shah Maludin and Asmil Salasain Yusuf and the fine on Nelson Lai Kah Seng yesterday.

All the accused persons pleaded guilty as charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable with a fine of up to RM100,000 or a jail term of up to five years, or both, upon conviction.

Hatta was jailed three months for possessing 0.04 gram of syabu at the security guard office of One Place Mall in Putatan on August 30. Azmi and Zahariman were jailed four months for possessing 0.22 gram and 0.06 gram respective­ly in Petagas on August 4 and 28.

Muliadi and Asmil each received six months jail for possessing 0.87 gram and 0.36 gram of syabu respective­ly at Jalan Sembulan and Taman Putrajaya here on August 31 and September 5. Huzaifah was jailed 12 months while Nelson was fined for committing similar offence in Penampang and here on August 28 and 9.

The court also ordered Asmil to be referred to the Immigratio­n Department after serving his sentence.

Inspector Albert Basirin prosecuted while Azmi and Hatta were represente­d by counsel Esther Ching from the National Legal Aid Foundation (NLAF).
