Pedestrian killed, two young women hurt in accidents

SANDAKAN: A pedestrian died after she was hit by a four-wheeldrive vehicle at Jalan Utara, Mile 6 here on Thursday evening.

District police chief ACP Mohd Azhar bin Hamin said police had received informatio­n of the accident which happened near the Sabah Forestry Department around 6.20pm.

“The accident involved a Ford Ranger vehicle and a foreign woman in her 40s.

“The pedestrian was seriously injured and died at the scene while the 25-year-old driver escaped unhurt,” he said.

Investigat­ion found that the pedestrian had negligentl­y crossed the road from Taman Tyng area.

The Ford Ranger driver was unable to avoid the pedestrian who suddenly crossed the road in front of him.

The case is being investigat­ed under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, two 19-year-old women were slightly injured after a Hyundai car lost control and hit the fence of 516th Territoria­l Army Regiment Camp, Jalan Utara in Tawau about 4.45am yesterday.

The driver who did not possess a driving license was arrested by the police for investigat­ion under Section 45(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Her blood sample had been taken and sent to the Chemistry Department.

District police chief ACP Fadil bin Hj Marsus said the accident was due to the carelessne­ss of the driver who was on her way from Fajar and heading towards Hill Top.

A security guard said he heard a loud braking sound and saw the car had hit the fence.
