Indonesian jailed eight years for supporting terrorism

KUALA LUMPUR: An Indonesian tailor was sentenced to a total of 19 years' jail by the High Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to three counts of supporting terrorism.

Judge Datuk Azman Abdullah sentenced Rino Kaswara Kasmar, 34 ,to eight years' jail each for the first and second count, and three years' jail for the third count, but to be served concurrently from the date of his arrest on June 12 this year.

On the first count, Rino Kaswara was charged with giving support to the Daesh (IS) terrorist group by making the loyalty pledge (bai'ah) through the telegram application in a chat group which he personally set up.

The offence was committed at Medan Niaga, Jalan Pasar ,Slim River, Perak, between 11.36 pm and 11.39 pm last May 2.

The charge, under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonment for life, or for up to 30 years, or with fine, and shall also be liable to forfeiture of any property used in connection with the commission of the offence.

He was also charged with promoting membership for the Mujahideen Indonesia Timur (MIT) and Daesh terrorist groups through a telegram chat group, using the name Rijal Mujahideen Minangkabau , at the same place between May 2 and June 2 this year.

The charge, under Section 130G(b) of the penal Code, provides an imprisonment for up to 30 years, and shall also be liable to fine, upon conviction.

Rino Kaswara was also charged with possession of a mobile telephone that had 83 images associated with Daesh and terrorism at Bazar Majlis Daerah Tanjung Malim (MDTM), Jalan Pasar, Slim River, at about 12.45 pm last June 12.

The offence is punishable under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which provides an imprisonment for up to seven years, or with fine, and shall also be liable to forfeiture of the items involved.
