House owners object to ‘hazardous’ flyover project
KOTA KINABALU: Citing grave safety concern, a group of 22 house owners from Taman Milek Phase 1 here has vehemently objected to the proposed construction of a flyover cutting across their backyard.
This was conveyed to the representatives of Azam Jaya Sdn Bhd, the contractor undertaking the construction of the proposed flyover during a meeting facilitated by the Api-Api assemblywoman, Christina Liew, at the residence of one of the affected house owners, on Monday.
Also in attendance were Azam Jaya’s representative Mathew Lo, assistant resident engineers for Perunding Puncak Anugerah Sdn Bhd, Julia Mahibol and Clement Ng Vui Kiong.
The group of house owners was especially concerned with the potential serious risk posed by the close proximity of the proposed flyover, citing the absence of the requirement for the 15-metre setback in the said proposed plan.
One house owner highlighted that even with the close proximity of the existing road, a car had rammed into the backyard of his house, early this year. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident.
They thus feared that with the construction of the proposed flyover dubbed the “Junction 11 flyover”, it might significantly increase the safety risk in the event of an accident.
Speaking at the meeting, Liew urged the Public Works Department and the various representatives of the project proponents to hold on with the implementation of the project and to look into the plight and suggestions contained in the petition signed by the affected house owners.
“Please hold on with the proposed flyover project until the concerns raised by the house owners are fully resolved,” she said.
In response, the various representatives of the project proponents promised to bring the matter for discussion during their meeting with the Public Works Department yesterday.
