Mixed Edu United, EMD FT complete Tawfiq Cup last 16

KOTA KINABALU: Mixed Edu United and EMD FT made it through to complete the list of last 16 teams in the Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan Cup Football League Tournament 2017.

Mixed Edu made it through after they beat TPS FC 2-1 in the final Group D match on Saturday, while EMD FT from Group C got the solitary ticket for the best fourth placed team of all groups.

Another match on Sunday saw Putra United defeat Kelab Reka DBKK 5-2 in Group E. The match concluded the tournament’s preliminar­y fixtures and was merely a formality after results from earlier matches put Putra United through along with Darau FC and Kelab Reka DBKK, who were second and third in Group E.

The group stage fixtures involved 23 teams and the matches were held at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex synthetic field in Likas since early last month.

All teams were divided into six groups and competed in a single round league format to determine the best 16 for the knock out stage. Only the top three from each group and the best fourth placed team went through.

The teams who are in the knock out stage comprise Racing Athletic FC KK, AMV FC Kimanis and Likas United FC II from Group A, Barracuda FC Pensiangan, The Blues FC KK, Adisson FC Kota Belud (Group B), Juta FC Keningau, Simfield FC KK, Terra Queen FC KK, EMD FT KK (Group C), Teambau FC Kota Belud, Unida FC KK, Mix Edu United Tuaran (Group D) and Putra United Kota Belud, Darau FC KK and Kelab Reka DBKK (Group E).

Meanwhile, the match draw for the knock out stage was conducted yesterday but results were not available at press time.

The eight matches would be held at the same venue on November 24-26.

The inaugural tournament is organised by the Titingan Football Club (TFC) with the cooperatio­n of Real Event, Mizanis Sports Boutique (MSB), Yunus Property Consultant Sdn Bhd and PANZER.

Up to RM29,000 in cash prizes are up for grabs as well as medals and trophies.

The champion will receive RM12,000 and the runner-up will pocket RM7,000, while the two losing semi-final teams will walk away with RM3,000. There is also a RM1,000 prize for teams who lose in the quarterfin­al (knock out stage).
