Council okays land for parking at Tawau Hospital

- By Christy Chok

TAWAU: The Tawau Municipal Council (TMC) has approved a piece of land next to the district Land and Survey Office (opposite Tawau Police Station) for public parking space as part of the hospital’s mega upgrading project that is expected to be completed in May, 2020.

President of the Visitors Board of Tawau General Hospital, William Chong said about 200 vehicles could be parked at the public parking space and he hoped the people could make good use of it.

Speaking to the media after paying a courtesy call on Tawau Hospital assistant director Jaclyn Gonduman in respect of parking shortage problems at the hospital, Chong said part of the temporary parking space in the hospital was affected by the upgrading project.

He hoped the people could understand this three-year project would benefit the people from Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna and Tawau.

He said the newly approved public parking ground is not situated within the hospital compound and people need to walk to the hospital for about five to 10 minutes.

Chong said the temporary parking land in front of Tawau Hospital does not belong to the Tawau Hospital and Government yet and the hospital management had written to the land owner asking for permission to use it for temporary parking space or installing lamp posts for public convenience.

He urged all drivers to park their vehicles at the right place without hindering the traffic flow.

The hospital management and TMC had also held a roundtable discussion about a new traffic flow proposal map and it will be announced once it is completed.

This hospital’s mega upgrading project was announced by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa during his visit to Tawau on August 6, 2016.

It is a three-year project costing more than RM200 million under the 11th Malaysia Plan to upgrade the Tawau Hospital to be jointly built by Shanghai Construction Group (M) Sdn Bhd and Sri Esbina (M) Sdn Bhd.

It will be the largest upgrading project in the east coast of Sabah for the health sector to benefit about 400,000 people.

The project will consist of six operation halls, ward with 555 beds, 38 specialist clinics, emergency and trauma units, radiology unit, hemodialysis unit, pharmacy and other medical equipment and amenities like water tanks and helicopter basement.
