KOTA KINABALU: Selection committee chairman for the 2018 President Cup and Youth Cup squads, Benedict Asmat is satisfied with the quality of players in the phase one trials.

Some 160 hopefuls turned up at the three-day event which began on Wednesday at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex here led by coach Justin Ganai.

“There is plenty of talent but too bad we have limited slots...we only need players for two teams and bear in mind that we still have existing players from both squads (President Cup and Youth Cup).

“We will do our best to give the quality players a chance to show more of what they can do in the phase two trials,” Benedict said when met at the Likas Stadium here, yesterday.

He said the selection panel would scrutinise all the players before determinin­g the list for the phase two trials which would be held at the same venue on November 28-30.

“Those who get selected to join the phase two trials will be notified in the next few days. They will have to compete with the existing players and I think it will be very competitiv­e,” Benedict said.

Currently there are 32 players in the President Cup squad. Fifteen are from the 2017 squad and 17 are from this year's Youth Cup squad who have exceeded the age limit. The current Youth Cup squad now only have 11 players.

The 15 President Cup players are Ranilson Batuil, Stanley Sulong, Mohd Radzi Saad, Hamran Peter, Fazile Jamileh, Eddey Ladius, Mohd Azmizan Rosli, Muhammad Zaki Sapri, Sullan Elvis Noh, Mohd Danishaizz Annuar, Mohd Jaylanie Kamaruddin, Yuseddy Yusiman and Abdul Raihan Rajum.

Players from the Youth Cup squad are Junloyck Pini Andawat, Kelvin Pengiran, Prosper George, Evan Wensley Wenceslaus, Adi Ali, Mohd Aidil Shahrolmiz­an Asimin, Pican Piok, Mohd Shah Mizie Abdul Rahim, Arius Dius Jais, Shahrul Asnan, Beckham Rico Louisee, Ellend Child Henry, Mohd Suzairee Samail, Fedrick Fadzly Gusmia, Mohd Shariman Mukarim, Mohd Asri Rustam and Mohd Aidil Safee.

Meanwhile the current Youth Cup squad comprise Joslan Aping, Gerald Gadit, Mohammad Syahmil Nizam Iqbal, Mohd Syukri Baharun, Mohd Aidil Muhimian, Mohammad Amirul Afiq Ali, Syafiq Ichwan Saiman, Muhammad Faqhrurazi Ahmad, Mohd Hizaz Mohd Lokman, Mohd Iqhbal Kassim and Leonardo Lisua.

“Aside from the selection trials we will also keep an eye out on the Sabah Games (Saga), which is happening in Sandakan next month. There could be some talents there that we can rope in,” Benedict said.
