LABUAN: The Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) Labuan continued to get the people’s involvement in combating the corruption menace, with more than 500 government servants, officials of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the people from all walks of life joined its Anti-Corruption Fun Run and Ride 2017 on Sunday.

Its director, assistant commissioner Abdulamin Abdillah, said the anti-corruption campaign was part of the agency’s efforts to achieve its objective of zero corruption among the people, especially the government officials.

The event at Sea Sports International Complex was a National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and Labuan’s NGO of Labuan Society.

“It was an inaugural event, and we received overwhelming response from the people at large,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The highlights of the event were 5km run, 25km ride and zumba aerobics.

“We want to foster good rapport with people at all levels, we want the people to know the MACC’s roles and job scopes, and importantly, we want the people to work together with us,” he said.

Abdulamin also said 51 government agencies and departments had so far signed the corruption-free pledge (IBR) as a positive sign to support the MACC’s initiatives.

Meanwhile, the Labuan Marine Department became the latest government department to sign the pledge last Wednesday, pledging to free its staff and officials from the corruption elements and abuse of power.

The pledge by 40 officials and staff was led by its director, Benjamin Bernard Bijion and witnessed by Abdulamin and his deputy Geoffrey Tawayan.

He said the IBR emphasised on the pledge and promise by the Marine Department’s leadership and staff on an individual capacity to shoulder responsibility and accountability to avoid from succumbing to temptations of corruption and abuse of power.

“By signing this pledge, the department’s leadership and staff clearly portray honesty, commitment and desire to serve in a conducive and corruption-free environment to carry out their duties to the people,” he said.
