Innovative, creative approach can enhance service quality of KK City Hall staff – Yong

KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) service staff should think outside the box in experiment­ing new work methods, as well as seek creative and innovative solutions.

Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah said DBKK staff should also possess critical and constructi­ve mindset in carrying out their responsibi­lities.

Yong, who oversees DBKK, said an innovative and creative approach could enhance the service quality of DBKK to the local community.

Nonetheles­s, he said these efforts needed to be supported by all the staff members, especially the top management, to ensure innovation and creativity become part of the work culture.

“Through innovative and creative work culture, I believe you (DBKK staff) will be able to execute your daily duties in a highly productive, high value, high thinking, highly skilled and highly motivated manner,” Yong said at DBKK Innovation Day Celebratio­n 2017 here yesterday.

He said the Innovation Day Celebratio­n as well as the Innovation and Creative Design Contest organized by DBKK was part of the efforts to recognize staff who had contribute­d towards enhancing the culture of innovation and creativity in the organizati­on.

“This is in line with the government’s effort to make innovation as one of the national agendas, particular­ly in transformi­ng the public sector in terms of the quality of delivery system to the local communitie­s.”

Yong also announced that the Kota Kinabalu Mayor Innovation Award would be introduced in 2018 in recognitio­n of individual­s or groups who contribute­d highimpact innovation and creativity to DBKK.

The Innovation and Creative Design Contest was divided into two categories, namely Management and Technical.

The top prize for the Management category went to the Valuation Department headed by its director Lifred Wong with their innovation ‘GeoValuer’; while Beta Engineerin­g Group from the Engineerin­g Department led by Linda Manahan won the first prize for the Technical category with ‘Smart Manhole Overflow Indicator (SMOI).

Meanwhile, Wong said the Geoval System created by the Valuation Department was the first of its kind in Malaysia.

He said the Geoval System, or Geovaluer, would transform manual valuation works to fully digital using the Geographic Informatio­n System (GIS) technology.

“The system can also store much more complex informatio­n that can be shared with other department­s in DBKK,” he said.

Also present were Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai and Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Datuk Michael Lui.
