Support for Forex RCI police report

-

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia UMNO Grassroots Movement (Gaum) has come forward to support the police report made by the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the foreign exchange losses incurred by Bank Negara Malaysia in the 1990s.

Its chairman, Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar said the movement lodged a police report on the issue at the Karamunsing police headquarters yesterday.

“We support the police report urging the police to conduct an official investigation into criminal breach of trust or other offences that might have been committed by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir (Mohamad), a former finance minister, former Bank Negara officers and its board of directors as well as the national Audit Department in performing speculative foreign exchange transactions in the 1990s which led to losses of RM31.5 billion,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He added the RCI in a report tabled in Parliament informed there was a basis for an official police investigation into the possibility of a breach of trust or fraud committed by Dr Mahathir in performing foreign exchange transactions in the 1990s.

“The police should also take legal action against lawyer Hanif Khatri for making an accusation that the RCI report was a document created to deceive the people.

“The RCI panel comprised professional members among whom were High Court Judge Kamaludin Md Said and Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tajuddin Atan,” said Zulkarnain. - Bernama
