KOTA KINABALU: Heriot-Watt University was recently named the International University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018, the first recipient in this newly appointed category of the awards that is regarded the most authoritative in the UK.

This is in recognition of the university’s global presence with five campuses altogether in the UK, Dubai and Malaysia; partners in 150 countries; and over 30,000 students worldwide.

“With high-quality, new campuses in Malaysia and Dubai, HeriotWatt students have outstanding opportunities to study abroad ... the overseas campuses also provide openings for students to travel in the opposite direction and experience Edinburgh first-hand. More than most, Heriot-Watt has embraced the worldview that marks out the finest higher education, making it our International University of the Year,” stated Alastair McCall, editor of the Sunday Times Good University Guide.

In celebration of this prestigious award, Heriot-Watt University is offering those who enrol for its January 2018 intake a complimentary two-week study trip to Edinburgh via its Experience Edinburgh programme. Anyone interested in this programme organised by the university is encouraged to register by December 22 to qualify. This is in conjunction with Heriot-Watt’s initiative as a global university that not just provides quality education but also international exposure to its students.

Studying for a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at HeriotWatt University Malaysia campus, Nur Syahira binti Mohd Yahya believes that her education in this course is pivotal in broadening the horizons for her future pursuits.

“Having an international qualification would certainly widen my scope of opportunities at a global level,” she said.

When asked why her choice university was Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, Syahira replied: “It offers the programme that I want to pursue with a different kind of environment, whereby I can benefit from the best of British curriculum in a local environment which, I find, is more conducive.”

Syahira believes she is ready for the prospects her future might bring with the exposure her degree has given her.

“The course I’m pursuing has a wide scope of applications and it can help me choose the career that will suit me most,” she said.

Heriot-Watt University was ranked among the top 50 universities in the world for international outlook according to the World University Rankings 2018. In addition, it is also fifth in the UK for Chemical Engineering based on The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.
