-

TAWAU: The Hap Seng Group organised the Hap Seng Group Tawau Summer Camp at Bandar Sri Indah Sports Complex here from December 4-9 to promote self-awareness, leadership character building and self-realisation.

Hap Seng Group CSR director Puan Sri Maimon Arif Patail officiated the at closing ceremony which was culminated with performances and a prize giving ceremony for the various activities held throughout the camp.

In her speech Maimon said it could be a scary experience for children to transition into teenage-hood.

“Every day is a new adventure for them to discover themselves. Children are born into this fastpaced globalised world, a world where a strong self-identity, self-worth and purpose are paramount.

“We are in a digital era where information is at our fingertips, ever-flowing, and there is good and bad that comes with it. We want the next generation to be able to evaluate this information, identify their goals and be purposeful in their actions.

“Through this camp, we hope to help build the next generation that cares about developing themselves and others. We want to help prepare them for the challenging 21st century. This camp is a great stepping stone for our children to explore themselves, have fun, develop leadership characteristics and build network,” she said.

The first of its kind in Tawau and by Hap Seng Group, this free-of-charge camp saw the participation of seven to 13-year-old children. Beyond expectation, more than 120 children registered, exceeding the 100 spots available.

Maimon said the participants underwent experimential learning sessions designed to nurture positive leadership character with emphasis on personality discovery, strengths discovery and character development.

Throughout the six-day camp, it was jam-packed with enthusiastic children having fun while being exposed to the four important areas of leadership; Teamwork, Enthusiasm, Responsibility and Creativity.

The camp theme was Super Leaders and participants were part of a superhero academy where they journeyed together with a superhero wannabe, learning new skills and lessons to prepare themselves as the earth’s mightiest protectors.

The children also worked in groups, developed and presented their Make A Difference (MAD) projects to their parents who were required to attend the camp’s closing.

Meanwhile, lead facilitator and Youth Programme Development executive from Leaderonomics, Qhairyl Iyzuan, said the kids had been great participants throughout the camp.

“They showed enthusiasm when carrying out their tasks as superheroes, working well with others and very responsive to the sessions. Working with a bunch of Tawau kids have been a fulfilling experience when we see them interacting with each other, portraying their leadership potential,” he said.

Participant Kong Sing Hung, 11, said he liked the fact that all the teachers spoke in English during the camp.

“I learnt how to be enthusiastic about things in life and how to be creative when I am creating stuffs,” he said.

Dhaniyah Aisyah Pang, 10, added: “Every activity here teaches me a lot, like patience and working together. I find many new friends here. I hope I can attend camps like this next year.”

Syed Hanafiah Syed Hussein, the father of Syed Muadz Zabir, eight, and Syed Kaab Uzair, nine, was glad his children joined the camp.

“I sent them to this camp to occupy their time during the school holidays, to learn about leadership, teamwork and getting to know new friends - mainly for the exposure. This programme is really good and hopefully it is open to more participants.”

Nurmaya Mohd Hairi, the mother of nine-year-old Jerrie Abd Wahab, mentioned that she did not mind travelling every day from Taman Megah Jaya to Bandar Sri Indah Sports Complex.

“My son is the one excited to go to the camp. He will wake us up very early in the morning for us to send him to the camp,” she said.
