Tennis: Defending champs KK make semi-finals

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Games (SAGA) Tennis Team event defending champions, Kota Kinabalu, are through to the semifinals of the girls’ competitio­n.

Also in the semi-finals were the 2015 Team event silver medallists Tawau, Keningau and Lahad Datu.

Defending gold medallists Kota Kinabalu booked their semi-finals berth after finishing second in Group A of the round-robin group fixtures.

Kota Kinabalu defeated Beaufort 3-0 and Sandakan 2-1 but lost to Keningau 0-3.

Keningau, who qualified as the Group A winners, also beat Beaufort 3-0 and Sandakan 2-1.

In Group B, Tawau advanced as the table toppers as expected after a perfect record of 3-0 wins against Semporna, Tenom and Lahad Datu.

Lahad Datu also made it into the last four after winning against Semporna 3-0 and Tenom 2-1.

The Girls’ Team semi-finals will see a rematch of the 2015 finals where Kota Kinabalu will face Tawau and Keningau against Lahad Datu with the final berth of the VIII SAGA up for grabs.

In the Men’s Team event, Sandakan and Keningau will feature in the semi-finals at the expense of Kota Marudu and Semporna in Group B.

However, the battle for the two spots in Group A will be fought among defending champions Kota Kinabalu, Tawau and Lahad Datu.

The other teams in Group A are Tenom and Beaufort.

The semi-finals and final will be played on Monday.
