M’sian diver failed SEA Games dope test

KUALA LUMPUR: The Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) yesterday revealed that three athletes including Malaysian gold medal diver Wendy Ng Yan Yee failed doping tests at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017).

Besides Wendy, two Thai athletes - Nurisan Loseng (Pencak Silat) and swimmer KUALA LUMPUR: The national futsal squad, ranked eighth in Asia, is expected to face an easy passage past the group competitio­n at the 2018 Asian Football Confederat­ion (AFC) Futsal Championsh­ip in Taiwan in February.

This was following the tournament’s draws, which were made yesterday, where Malaysia was voted with Vietnam (fifth in Asia), home side Taiwan (17th) and Bahrain (21st) in Group A, according to http://www.theafc.com/news/afcsection/afcfutsal-championsh­ip-2018-drawresult­s.

Group B was regarded as a deadly group which had Asia’s Benjaporn Sriphanomt­horn - also failed the ‘B sample’ test conducted recently.

SEAGF president Tan Sri Tunku Imran Tuanku Jaafar said their victories and the medals would be withdrawn.

“They will be disqualifi­ed in all events and the medals will be taken away from them.

“If they won gold, the winner second-best team, namely, Japan with Uzbekistan, which is ranked third in Asia, as well as Tajikistan and South Korea.

Meanwhile, defending champion and also Asian giants, Iran was voted in Group C along with Iraq, China and Myanmar, while Group D had SEA Games Kuala Lumpur 2017 gold medal winner Thailand, Lebanon, Jordan and Kyrgyzstan.

The two best teams of each group will advance to the quarter-finals of the biennial tournament which was entering the 15th edition.

Nurisan, who helped her team win gold in women’s team art event has to give way to the silver medallist from Vietnam.

Benjaporn also loses two silver medals, in the 10km open water swimming and 4x200m team relay event.

Singapore’s Chantal Liew is awarded the silver medal in the 10km open water event while the Philippine­s’ relay team is promoted to win silver in the 4x200m.

All three athletes had tested positive for the banned substance sibutramin­e by the World AntiDoping Agency (WADA) at its laboratory in New Delhi on Oct 11.

Sibutramin­e is an appetite suppressan­t which is commonly found in weight loss supplement­s. – Bernama
