KOTA KINABALU: Hosts Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu shared honours in the tennis competition of the VIII Sabah Games (SAGA) while Keningau suffered double heartbreaks after losing both the title matches.
Sandakan won the men’s Team gold after a 2-1 win over Keningau at the Sandakan Tennis Club yesterday.
Victories for Hiew Kee Jun in the first singles as well as Haris John and Ngui Larm in the doubles all but secured the gold for Sandakan.
Keningau, who had beaten defending champions Kota Kinabalu in the semi-finals, got their consolation points through Bona Venture after his opponent Nik Ahmad retired in the second set of their battle.
The bronze medals went to Kota Kinabalu and Tawau.
In the women’s final, Kota Kinabalu successfully defended the gold they won two years ago in Tawau by beating Keningau 2-1.
Chang Ken Wyn defeated Callis Fung 3-6, 6-3 and 10-5 while the David sisters, Serena and Sabrina, won 6-1, 6-1 to hand Kota Kinabalu the gold.
Keningau’s solitary point came from Sabrina Trisha who edged Nurul Aziz 7-5, 6-3.
Tawau and Lahad Datu settled for the bronze.
YB Datuk Au Kam Wah and wife presented the prizes for the events.
Sabah Tennis Association president Johnson Koh and officials from Sandakan District Tennis Association were also present.
