Multi-lingual ability an extra advantage in working world — Raymond
KOTA KINABALU: The ability to communicate in multiple languages is an essential skill that one must have in facing today’s global challenges, Datuk Seri Panglima Raymond Tan Shu Kiah said.
He opined that the subject of language differs significantly from other subjects as language requires a person to acquire skills from various aspects.
“One must possess skills such as writing, reading, listening and conversing if one wishes to master any language. However, today’s younger generation tends to rely on technology to read and write.
“That is why, the habit of reading must be emphasized in order to help students learn English, as well as other languages,” Raymond said when launching Institut Sinaran’s Language Laboratory yesterday.
To achieve this goal, parents would also have to take their responsibility, Raymond asserted, adding that the ability to speak in multiple languages will give a person an extra advantage in the working world.
“A laboratory such as this plays a vital role in the process of language learning and the use of technology would also improve a person’s ability to master a language,” he added.
Raymond also congratulated KKIP Sdn Bhd and OCBC Malaysia (Sabah) for fulfilling their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through the financial contributions towards the laboratory.
Present in the event was Institut Sinaran Board of Governors chairman Fong Tet Kong.
“For the younger generation, though savvy in the use of modern day smartphones, there is still a need to comprehend how to put a set of words together to achieve a coherent message,” Fong said in his speech.
“Our language laboratory will start with English as the medium of teaching. As time goes by, we shall increase other languages depending on its needs.
“Our three programmes, namely, A Level Science and Commerce, Diploma in Commerce and Foundation in Science are all thought in English. For 30 years, English has helped our graduates to continue into institutions of higher learning and to complete their studies,” he added.
Among the objectives of the laboratory are to equip the students with good communication skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking), to emphasize the need of English in the educational and occupational field, to prepare students for interviews and future environments and to train students in the art of conversation.
The lab uses up-to-date language teaching and learning materials and resources such as the Oxford English Language series and its syllabus will be able to prepare students for MUET and IELTS exams.
In addition, the lab will also provide interactive English workbook that will engage students both online and offline.
Also present was Institut Sinaran chief executive officer Marie Yong.
