SUPP to reject direct BN candidates

- By Lim How Pim

KUCHING: The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has resolved to reject direct Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates for the 14th general election (GE14).

This resolution was made during the party’s triennial delegates conference (TDC) 2017 yesterday.

Re-elected SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said this was the one and only resolution adopted by the delegates at the function held in SUPP headquarters here.

“All delegates resolve that we reject direct BN candidates. GE14 is coming and we want to focus on GE – nothing else,” he told reporters at a press conference held after chairing the central committee (CC) meeting.

Dr Sim said he was honoured by the mandate to continue leading SUPP for another three years.

He then announced Chieng Buong Toon from the central region as the newly-elected deputy president, alongside Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem who remains as deputy president.

“Our secretary-general is Datuk Sebastian Ting and treasurer is Datuk Francis Harden Hollis. These are the top five posts elected by the delegates.

“As for our 125 (members of) CC, there was no contest. Our CC elected the CWC (Central Working Committee),” said Dr Sim.

Asked why the TDC did not hold any election, he replied: “All (posts were) uncontested and unopposed.

“This shows the unity of the party. It shows that SUPP is a party ready for GE14; that SUPP does not spend much time on internal quarrels.”

According to Dr Sim, SUPP delegates realised the importance of unity as well as the need to focus on the next parliamentary election.

“I know it is very boring for you guys (reporters), but it is very important for us. We want to focus on the election,” he quipped.

Apart from the top five posts, the SUPP CWC line-up for the 2018-2020 term includes vicepresidents Datuk Lily Yong, Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, Michael Tiang who is also SUPP Youth chief, and Kho Teck Wan who is also the Women’s chief.

Sih Hua Tong and Dato Ting Check Sii are deputy secretaries-general, while Karambir Singh Honey, Ling Chai Yui@Danny Banjang, Teng Ung Woo and Bong Lian Huan are the assistant secretaries-general.

Robert Lau is assistant treasurer, followed by Datuk Matthew Chen as organising secretary, Johnny Pang (assistant organising secretary), Adam Yii (publicity and information secretary) and Lo Khere Chiang (assistant publicity and information secretary).
