New Year Festival Strongman Open Challenge Dec 30-31
KOTA KINABALU: It will be a clash between newbies and regular campaigners at the New Year Festival Strongman Open Challenge happening here, next weekend.
The event, which is happening at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex (KKSC) on December 30 and 31 promises top-notch action featuring contestants of 95kg and below.
Tournament coordinator Roger Fredrick said the event has attracted a handful of entries and that more are expected to register next week.
“So far we have 12 confirmed entries. We expect a few more to join next week because the entry is open until the eleventh hour.
“Initially the event was scheduled to be held on December 23 and 24 but was delayed due to unavoidable circumstances and popular demand,” he said.
Roger said among the seasoned campaigners taking part are Andoro Bandang from Tuaran and Bob Junior from Penampang.
“Andoro is no stranger to strongman events. He has competed in almost all the competitions in Sabah and Labuan since 2011 and Bob since 2015.
“As seasoned campaigners, they will definitely be among the favourites, while some of the new contestants are expected to put up strong challenges,” Roger said.
Among the new faces are Sam Alexsius, Anthony Fan Chai Min and Ronald Rahman from Tambunan, while Rizam Ismail is from Keningau.
The event which would be held at the KKSC car park will feature eight classic strongman challenges namely Truck Pull (10 tonne), Farmer's Walk (100kg x 2), Yoke Walk (200kg), Tyre Flip (420kg), Bear Hug (110kg), Log Press (110kg), Car Dead Lift (Nissan Almera) and Atlas Stone (90-130kg).
The two-day competition, which is organised by GAMA Generation and coordinated by Borneo Extreme Events is offering attractive cash prizes for the winners.
