Mechanic to hang for drug trafficking

-

GEORGE TOWN: A mechanic was sent to the gallows to be hanged to death by the High Court here yesterday after he was found guilty of trafficking in two kilogrammes of cannabis into the country .

Judge Datuk Lim Chong Fong handed down the sentence on Mohammed Kanathi Meerah Mydin after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts against the prosecution’s case at the end of the defence case.

In the judgment, Lim said the defence by Mohammed, 42, was unreliable.

“The court could not accept the defence testimony that the witness who was released was the individual who carried the drug.

“Apart from that, the accused also said that the witness, who was his friend, was the one who asked him to speed away that an accident happened before they were arrested by the police,” he said.

Mohammed, who lost his right leg in the accident, was charged with trafficking in the drug in a silver Hyundai Elantra car at Jalan Gudwhara through Jalan S.P Chelliah here at 3.30 am on April 16, 2014.

He was charged under Section 39B of the dangerous Drugs Act, which provides the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Azrul prosecuted, while lawyer Mohamad Arif Shaharudin represented Mohammed. Bernama
