-

KUANTAN: Police are hunting down a man who posed as a policeman and kidnapped a 16-year-old girl in Raub on Wednesday.

Raub District Police Chief Supt Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said the dark-skinned, thin suspect, who is in his 30s, was believed to have tricked the victim’s mother by saying he needed the girl’s help.

He said the suspect had gone to the victim’s house in Kampung Ulu Gali, Sungai Ruan, Raub, at about 11 am and introduced himself as a police sergeant who had just been transferred to the Sungai Ruan Police station.

“The suspect then asked the woman’s permission to take the girl to help him get a motorcycle he had just bought. The mother gave her consent and saw her daughter get into the suspect’s car.

“The victim was said to have contacted her mother at 1 pm to say that she was at a supermarket in Raub and would be returning home soon,” he said when contacted here yesterday.

Wan Mohd Zahari added that at 3 pm, the woman received another telephone call from her daughter who said she was in Gua Musang, Kelantan, safe and would be home soon.

“However, the line was cut off and the mother tried to contact her daughter several times after that before she received an text message asking her not to worry,” he said.

At 4 pm, the mother lodged a police report.

Wan Mohd Zahari also said social media reports that the suspect was wearing a police uniform were untrue as he only introduced himself to the victim’s mother as a policeman.

The case is being investigated under Section 363 of the Penal Code for kidnapping which is punishable with imprisonment up to seven years, and a fine, as well as under Section 170 for personating a public servant, which is punishable with a prison sentence of up to two years or fine, if found guilty. - Bernama
