TAWAU: Commanding officer of the Territorial Army 516th Regiment Brigadier General Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah agreed that Peoples Volunteer Corps (Rela) members be deployed along the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) effective January 1, 2018 in order to assist the military, police and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) under the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) to secure the area, including the numerous resorts along the coast.

He said it was not a new measure to be taken to improve security in the area, and if the 516th Regiment be given the opportunity to assist in ESSZone, he would strongly encourage all Territorial Army (TA) members to assist.

“Improving the security and preserving the country’s sovereignty is a mutual responsibility,” he said.

He told the media this when attending a gotong-royong at Hotspring Old Folk’s Home here yesterday.

It is one of their annual welfare activities, besides creating awareness among the youngsters on the importance of respecting and caring for the elders.

This gotong-royong was participated by more than 100 members from TA, Army Battalion 26, Prisons Department Tawau, Rela, Tawau Federation of Chinese Associations and other volunteers.

Liew also urged youngsters never to forget the elders, including their elders at home because without the elders, there would be no youngsters and development.

He said elders could not be replaced by money or properties.

He expressed hope that such programs could be held from time to time and members of public are encouraged to join in actively without being invited.

They also celebrated New Year together with 33 elders and 20 staff members and were also given hampers and angpao.
