4.7 million Year One to Form Five students nationwide

SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan Education Department recorded a total of 169,345 Year One to Form Five students starting the new school year in the state yesterday.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon said of the total, 73,898 were secondary students and the remaining 95,447 primary pupils.

“Nationwide, a total of 4.7 million Year One to Form Five students were recorded for the 2018 academic session.

"In Johor, Terengganu, Kedah and Kelantan, 10,189 schools started the new school session yesterday," he told reporters after visiting Sekolah Kebangsaan King George V in Ampangan near here yesterday.

Also present were State Public Utilities, Environmen­t, Cooperativ­es and Consumeris­m Committee chairman Datuk Abu Ubaidah Redza, who is also Ampangan state assemblyma­n, and Negeri Sembilan Education Department director Pkharuddin Ghazali.

Chong later visited Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Sin Hua in Seremban.

Meanwhile in Perak total of 32,774 children entered Year One yesterday on the first day of the new school year.

State director of education Datuk Mat Lazim Idris said 23,859 of them had enrolled at national schools; 7,113 at national type Chinese schools; 1,709 at national type Tamil schools and 93 at government-aided religious schools.

He also said that 34,817 students had registered to enter Form One in secondary schools in the state.

"The first day today of the new school year proceeded smoothly at all schools although several schools had fewer pupils and students,” he said to reporters after calling at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kampung Bahagia here.

Perak has 1,100 primary and secondary schools.
