Former cop charged with cheating businessman
CHUKAI: A former police officer pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here yesterday to a charge with cheating a businessman of RM140,000 through an investment scheme which did not exist.
Mohd Salam Zainal Abidin, 31, who was previously with the Kemaman district police headquarters, was charged with cheating Tan Yunn Siong, 50, at 11.48 am at the Kemaman branch of the Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd on May 25, 2016.
His wife, Nurul Shahila Saayan, 28, who was charged with abetting him in committing the alleged offence, also pleaded not guilty.
The couple, through one Zamri Ismail , was alleged to have cheated Tan by deceiving him to invest in a property investment scheme, which they knew did not exist.
They were charged under Section 400 of the Penal Code and faced an imprisonment for up to 10 years, with whipping and fine, if found guilty.
Judge Badrul Munir Mohd Hamdy set bail at RM10,000 in one surety on Mohd Salam, and RM5,000 in one surety on Nurul Shahila.
He also ordered the couple to surrender their passports to the court .
Mohd Salam could not post bail and was sent to Marang Prison.
However, his wife, managed to raise the bail amount.
The court set Jan 29 for mention.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Fadli Mahmud, while the couple was represented by lawyers Mohd Nasir Yusof and Mohd Fauzi Abd Samad. Bernama
