LABUAN: Mohammad Hasbullah Sanmin ‘King Garagas’ is the new champion of the inaugural Borneo Martial Arts Expo (BMAEX) 2017, having beaten one of Borneo’s most reputable Muay Thai fighter, Sunny N. Sabornido over two and a half rounds in the ISKA K1 National Championship.

Hasbullah used his reach and mixed martial arts ability to cause Sunny problems from the outset in the first ever ISKA 57kg title of the Super 4 Fight tournament, scoring a knockdown on the way to claiming a unanimous decision win.

“It was a very tough fight as Sunny had also won a number of major tournaments and held title belts,” the newly-crowned champion told Bernama.

His punches caught Sunny’s attention early and seemed to disrupt his game plan in the sweat drenched bout.

Hasbullah’s height and body structure did not deter him from attacking Sunny aggressively from the first to the last bout and he went on to finish the bout with a knockdown at 1:18.

His hand work forced Sunny out of position defensively, which opened him up to a knockdown blow in the second round.

By the third round, Sunny started showing signs of fatigue while desperately looking for that one blow to end the fight.

Instead, Hasbullah landed more decent shots in the round, with Sunny struggling to stay upright all the while.

The inevitable referee decision was a foregone conclusion, with Hasbullah emerging as the winner and new BMAEX 2017 champion.

Hasbulllah, started his profession as a mixed martial arts athlete since he was in primary school before becoming a professional mixed martial artist in October 2017.

The 24-year-old martial artist from Keningau was described as a talented and skillful martial arts athlete in Sabah, having won many titles throughout his 12-year involvement in martial arts.

He was the champion of The Best of Sabah Muay Thai, Fight Fest 2 MMA Super 4, Fight Fest 3 MMA Super Fight, Borneo Amateur Challenge 2 MMA Super 4, Borneo Amateur Challenge 5 K1 Super Fight, F3 MMA Super Fight, Golden Warrior Pro Fight MMA, Jesselton Fight League MMA (Title Belt Champion) and ISKA K1 Super 4 (Title Belt Champion).

Hasbullah also won several Brazilian Jiu-jitsu events in Sabah including the Head Hunter 2015 (Gold), Badak Open 2015 (Gold) and Sabah Open 2017 (Double Gold).

The Sabah martial arts champion who was described as ‘having unpredictable attack and hardest puncher’ was inspired by his father, who was active in silat.
