Seven rhythmic gymnasts vying for three Commonwelath Games slots

-

KUALA LUMPUR; Seven national gymnasts will be assessed to fill three slots for the rhythmic gymnastics event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia this April, said Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF) deputy president Petrina Low.

She said the final list of names would not be announced until it was submitted to the Olympic Council of Malaysia later this month.

“We want to be fair to all the gymnasts. We don’t want to reveal any names until the final decision has been made. They will undergo intensive training sessions in Uzbekistan in early February.

“They will then join the Grand Prix Championship in Moscow before returning to Malaysia,” said Low, who is targeting a gold medal from the rhythmic gymnastics squad.

The seven gymnasts are Koi Sie Yan, Amy Kwan, Izzah Azman, Chong Lok Yi, Tammy Ng, Nur Naieme Zainul Ariffin and N. Shasangari.

Petrina said a gold medal target was placed for the rhythmic gymnastics team event, however any medal in the four apparatus events contested, would be a bonus.

Meanwhile, MGF has listed Jeremiah Loo Phay Xing and Tan Fu Jie for the men’s artistic event, and they will be participating in the World Cup in Melbourne in February and the World Championships in Doha in March ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

Three slots have been filled for the women’s artistic event, with one vacancy to be finalised by the end of this month.

The three confirmed gymnasts are Farah Ann Abdul Hadi, Tracie Ng and Tan Ing Yuen, while the remaining slot is being contested by Nur Azira Aziri, Lavinia Jayadev and Nur Eli Ellina Azmi. Bernama
