NUTP outlines code of ethics for parents, guardians

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has outlined a code of ethics for parents/guardians containing 23 elements in dealing with education institutions such as schools, vocational colleges, matriculation centres and Institutes of Teacher Education.

Its president Kamarozaman Abd Razak said of the 23, 15 were on matters which should be adhered to by parents and guardians while the remaining touch on things that should be avoided by them.

“The code of ethics encompasses guidelines and rules which should be adhered to by parents and guardians to ensure good understanding between them and the education institution.

“All this while, parents were not clear, so if there is a black and white document, maybe they will change. At the very least, they can communicate with the education institution’s management before reporting any case to the police,” he said in a press conference at Wisma NUTP here yesterday.

Kamarozaman said among the NUTP proposals was that parents and guardians were required to refer to the principal/headmaster on any problems between a teacher and a student first.

Apart from that, he said parents and guardians were also not allowed to carry helmets or items which could be used as weapons in schools based on security policy.

“They also cannot abuse teachers by sending threatening messages via email, text, voice mail, phone call or written communication on social media.

“We will submit the proposals to the Education Ministry (KPM) soon. We are only proposing, only KPM has the power to enforce it (the code),” he said.

Education Minister, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid prior to this had said the ministry would be having a meeting with NUTP and Persatuan Guru-Guru Malaysia, to discuss the proposal.

In this regard, NUTP also called on the ministry to reprint the School Disciplinary Procedure book for headmasters and teachers as it was last printed in 1988.

“The book is no longer in the market, its stock has run out, When a certain issue crops up, teachers may need to refer to the book,” he said. - Bernama
