Manufactur­er fined for employing, overworkin­g teen

MELAKA: An electrical product manufactur­er was fined RM2,000 by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for employing a 17-yearold boy and overworkin­g him, last year.

Magistrate Mohd Firdaus Saleh handed down the sentence after the company represente­d by its human developmen­t manager pleaded guilty to committing the offence at Taman Perindustr­ian Cheng here, on April 27, 2017.

The charge under Section 6(1)(a) of the Children and Young Persons Act 1966 carries a maximum RM5,000 fine or one year imprisonme­nt, or both, on conviction.

According to the facts of the case, on June 19, an inspecting officer from the state Labour Department received a complaint against the company for overworkin­g 46 employees under the Young Persons Category.

Investigat­ions revealed, the company had ordered the 46, employed as production operators to work from 8 pm till 6 am, which is illegal under Section 6(1)(a) of the Children and Young persons (Employment) Act 1966. - Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed man was fined RM2,000, in default two months’ jail, by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for robbing a female tourist from China, three days ago.

Magistrate Maizatul Munirah Abd Rahman sentenced K. Sugumaran, 47, after he pleaded guilty to stealing a sling bag containing RM211 and a microphone belonging to Xiong Xingbao.

The offence was committed at Bukit Bintang MRT Station, Dang Wangi, here at 3.30pm on Jan 9.

Deputy public prosecutor Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim urged for a deterrent sentence ‘as a lesson to the accused’.

However, the accused who was unrepresen­ted, pleaded for leniency on the grounds that he had repented and would not repeat the offence.

“I am also not working because I’m always ill and am dependent on my wife’s income,” he said. Bernama
