Cop among eight held, drugs and RM2.1 mln cash seized

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Police say they have crippled another major drug syndicate with the confiscation of RM721,000 in various narcotics during raids across the country.

They also arrested eight people including a junior police officer in the enforcement action carried out on January 10 and 11 in Johor, Negri Sembilan and several other spots here.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohamad Salleh said among items seized are assets worth RM2.71 million as well as RM2.1 million in local and foreign currencies.

“Among the drugs seized are 10.3kg of Syabu, 7.9kg of marijuana, 10 Erimin 5 pills and 42 ecstasy pills. The drugs can be used to supply over 50,000 drug addicts.

“We also seized eight cars, various jewellery and 50 9mm bullets,” he said.

According to Mohamad, the cash was found and confiscated in a raid on a condominium at Sri Petaling.

Mohamad revealed that the police officer arrested was posted in KL and was believed to have been used by the syndicate as an intermediary and minor supplier.

“The officer, however, tested negative for drugs,” he said.

The suspects were all locals aged between 32 and 58.

All eight have been remanded for seven days to to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.

The offence until recently carried a mandatory death penalty upon conviction, but Parliament passed an amendment last year that allows judges to hand down life sentences as an alternative.
