Over 100 brave downpour to commemorat­e first anniversar­y of Adenan’s passing

SIBU: Despite heavy rain, over 100 people gathered at Sibu Gateway Thursday night, to commemorat­e the first anniversar­y of the passing of Pehin Sri Adenan Satem.

The vigil which began at 7pm was organised by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP).

Most of the participan­ts were members of SUPP, Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressiv­e Democratic Party (PDP).

SUPP Central deputy president Chieng Buong Toon described Adenan as a leader with wisdom who had served the people of Sarawak wholeheart­edly.

“He had set his developmen­t vision for all Sarawakian­s, regardless of their race and religion. He had worked with the people towards a harmonious Sarawak.

“He had managed the state with just and fairness, and protected the autonomy and the people of Sarawak,” he recalled.

Chieng said Adenan was best remembered in his fight for Sarawak’s autonomy and the abolishmen­t of tolls.

“The fairness of his policies included ensuring the developmen­t of the Chinese schools by giving grants, recognisin­g the Unified Examinatio­n Certificat­e (UEC) and allowing Chinese private schools to apply for education loans and scholarshi­ps.

“Adenan had brought about economic transforma­tion for the state and narrowed the developmen­t gap between rural and urban areas,” he said.

The night’s programme included autograph signing and playing of Adenan’s favourite songs.

Adenan, Sarawak’s fifth Chef Minister passed away on Jan 11, 2017 at the age of 72.
