KUDAT: Superintendent Douglas Nyeging Taong said police in the district are focusing on schools in crime prevention programs, especially drugs.

The district police chief said this was the initial step taken by police in preventing students from engaging in drug abuse.

“We do not want them to be trapped by drugs that can ruin their future and their families,” he said when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday.

According to him, police records showed that eight students were involved in various drug offenses last year.

He said this was very alarming and the police here would focus its programs on schools this year in curbing drug abuse and other unhealthy social symptoms among students.

Earlier when launching the Jom to School, Loving Teacher practice and Mentor Mentee program at SK Pekan Kudat II here yesterday, Douglas said the program was to strengthen police cooperation with the school management in addressing the misbehavior of students as well as motivating students to always succeed.

He said the program was more motivated toward the crime of misconduct and drugs among students at the school.

“I also ask teachers to apply pure values to pupils to produce more ethical and responsible students.

“I also assure we will always be working with the school in whatever matters, including preparing to provide talks on social illness cases, misconduct and drug abuse,” he said.

The program was attended by 950 students including the Headmaster, Haji Zamanhuri Haji Ismail, Senior Assistant of Student Affairs, Norsiah Hassan, Co-curriculum Senior Assistant, Hisham Abdul Jale, senior police officers and teachers.
