LDP’s New Gen targets young people for political awareness

-

KOTA KINABALU: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) supreme council has passed a motion during a recent meeting to form the New Generation Movement (New Gen) headed by protem leader Eric Lau.

The New Gen intends to target young people aged between 18 to 30 years old.

According to Lau, the objective of the New Gen is to enhance the younger generation’s awareness of the current political landscape and to provide a platform to showcase their talents and express their views.

“We ought to study and gain a deeper understanding of issues affecting our community and country,” he said when briefing LDP president Datuk Seri Panglima Teo Chee Kang on the progress of the formation of the New Gen here.

Also present were LDP deputy president Datuk Chin Su Phin, secretary general Senator Datuk Yong Wui Chung, chief publicity officer Albert Kok, and organizing secretary Peter Chong.

Lau said society was at times skeptical or even rejected the involvement of young people in politics.

“The involvement of young people in politics is often perceived as impulsive acts, some even think that the younger generation are incapable of walking the talk,” he said.

However, Lau stressed that the opinions aired by young Malaysians should be given equal weight and treated seriously.

“New Gen hopes to provide an excellent platform for our youths to speak up,” he said.

On another note, Lau thanked Teo, Chin and Yong for giving their strong support and valuable opinions on the formation of the New Gen.

“With support from the party leadership and guidance from the Central Youth and Women movements, I believe the New Gen will expand and grow stronger in times to come,” Lau opined.

New Gen will be organising various events this year with the aim of providing an opportunity for youths to unleash their talents and acquire leadership and teamwork skills.

Lau said the public activities held by the New Gen would also allow young people to be attuned to the needs and dynamics of the local communities.

“We welcome interested young people to join our team,” he said.

The protem committee of New Gen are deputy leader Alvin Saw, vice leaders Quincy Poong and Mok Chuang Kun, secretary Eva Lee, assistant secretary Chloe Wong, treasurer Kuo Pui Ling, assistant treasurer Irving Thien, publicity officer Pius Lee, assistant publicity officer Sammie Yew, and committee members Joseph Kong, Nelson Chok, Andrew Lim and Theodore Poong.
