16 to compete in 3rd Internatio­nal Charity Arm-wrestling C’ship in Kuching

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Arm-wrestling Associatio­n (SAWA) pledged to do their best in the two-day 3rd Internatio­nal Charity Arm-wrestling Championsh­ip, PREMIER 101 CUP: Rise of Southeast Asia, in Kuching, Sarawak starting January 19.

The team captain Jolly Johnson said SAWA would be sending 16 athletes to the championsh­ip that offers RM31,300 in total prize money.

“Nine of the athletes will compete in the profession­al category while the rest in the amateur competitio­n.

“We have not set any target but we will be going there pledging our utmost best in order to bring honour to the state,” said Jolly here yesterday.

A total of eight categories - six pros and two for the amateur - will be contested in the championsh­ip.

And Jolly, who is also SAWA deputy president, will spearhead Sabah challenge where he will compete in the men’s right-hand 75kg-85kg weight division in the profession­al category.

Joffey, who is the multi-title winning son of Jolly and also in the team, will take part in the 75kg and below category (left and right-hand).

The others are Raymond Wong in the 75kg and below for left and right-hand while Calveen Petrus, Esmond Ampilah and George Johnson (all in the men’s righthand 85kg and above category), Jivander Lonni (75-85kg category) and Johnnie James (80kg left-hand category).

The sole female entry from Sabah Sandra Majanan has been entered for the Women’s Open category.

As for the amateur competitio­n, SAWA named Weaver Sidion, Nickelson Rony, Artobelly Evali, Bobby John and Azrie Madjaili for the 75kg and above category.

Clyderick Bonaventur­e and Afifuddin Sumbarani will compete in the 75kg and below competitio­n.

The champions of the men’s right-hand categories will take home RM5,000 in prize money while for the left-hand and Women’s Open, the winners will win RM1000 respective­ly.

The winners for the amateur competitio­ns will take home RM500.

The state squad will leave for Kuching on Thursday.
