Dept urged to resolve Kinabatangan water supply issue

KINABATANGAN: The Sabah Water Department (SWD) has been urged to immediately solve the issue of clean water supply especially to Kampung Paris 3, here.

Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Bung Mokhtar Radin said that the supply of clean water to Kampung Paris 1, 2 and 3 is still inadequate and often disconnected until today which has affected residents in the area.

“I would like to know the cause of this problem as Kampung Paris is not a hilly area that requires high water pressure.

“The government has channeled sufficient allocation worth millions of ringgit, but unfortunately residents in this area still have to endure problematic clean water supply,” he said to reporters at the temporary center for fire victims whose houses were destroyed in the recent fire incident.

A total of 30 shops and houses, a mosque and two vehicles were destroyed by fire on Friday leaving 80 victims homeless, forcing them to seek temporary shelter at the center.

The situation became worse as the fire department faced difficulty in controlling the fire due to the low water pressure in the area.

He pointed out that whatever problems faced by SWD should be resolved as soon as possible to ensure the well being of residents in Kampung Paris. While visiting the victims, Bung also presented food donations and cooking utensils to the head of the household.

Commenting on the shops and houses involved in the fire, Bung said all of the involved property were built on road reserve and may be considered for demolition if necessary to widen the road. He added that he had asked representatives of the district and district councils to look into the area to ensure that every development would have a good impact and not be detrimental in the future.
