President Cuppers claim SAFA Beaufort Quadrangul­ar Football Tournament title

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah President Cup squad defeated the State Youth Cup side 3-0 to conclude the SAFA Beaufort Quadrangul­ar Football Tournament in style yesterday.

The Johnny Dominicusc­oached side had on Saturday clinched the title but they were determined to keep their perfect record intact.

And, it showed in the last match of the round-robin formatted tournament at the Beaufort Sports Complex.

The state under-21 team opened with a 2-0 win over hosts Beaufort Selection on Friday before beating Kuala Penyu Selection 9-0 the following day.

The huge win coupled with the Youth Cup (under-19) squad 2-2 outcome against Beaufort secured the President Cuppers the title.

With the title in hand, the Junior Rhinos went into yesterday’s last group fixtures against their under19 counterpar­ts and they did not disappoint, winning the tournament with a maximum nine points.

The other match yesterday saw Beaufort Selection and Kuala Penyu Selection playing to a thrilling 4-4 outcome.

Beaufort Selection would finish as the tournament runners-up courtesy of superior goal difference followed by the Youth Cup squad and Kuala Penyu Selection. All three teams ended the tournament on two points.

The champions received RM3,000 while the second placing took home RM1,500. The third and fourth placings got a RM500 consolatio­n prize each.

President of SAFA Beaufort Datuk Haji Abdul Razak Sulaiman presented the prizes to the winners.

The three-day tournament also served as a preparatio­n platform for the state under-21 and under-19 squads before they compete in their respective leagues.
