Five Asean pros to challenge top golfers at Maybank C’ship

KUALA LUMPUR: Maybank yesterday announced the participat­ion of five Asean profession­al golfers for the upcoming Maybank Championsh­ip golf tournament to be held from February 1 to 4 at the Saujana Golf and Country Club, Subang.

They are Justin Quiban of the Philippine­s; Michael Tran (Vietnam); Naing Naing Lin (Myanmar); Quincy Quek (Singapore); and, Rory Hie (Indonesia).

The inclusion of these players is part of Maybank’s commitment to grow and nurture players within the Asean region via the special Asean category in the tournament; the first initiative of its kind on the Internatio­nal Tours’ circuit.

“It has always been Maybank’s aim to provide opportunit­ies for qualified Asean players to stand a chance at competing in a world class event.

“We are proud to provide the platform to ensure profession­al golfers, especially in countries that we operate across the Asean region will have the opportunit­y to develop their skills as profession­als and gain the experience needed to excel on the global stage,” said Maybank Group President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Abdul Farid Alias in a statement here yesterday.

These players have been selected based on their Asian Tour Order of Merit, Asian Developmen­t Tour Order of Merit, World Ranking and local tour Order of Merit in their respective countries (where available).

They will be competing against top Asian and European Tour players, who include world number nine, Henrik Stenson of Sweden and defending champion, Fabrizio Zanotti of Paraguay.
