Five Asean pros to challenge top golfers at Maybank C’ship
KUALA LUMPUR: Maybank yesterday announced the participation of five Asean professional golfers for the upcoming Maybank Championship golf tournament to be held from February 1 to 4 at the Saujana Golf and Country Club, Subang.
They are Justin Quiban of the Philippines; Michael Tran (Vietnam); Naing Naing Lin (Myanmar); Quincy Quek (Singapore); and, Rory Hie (Indonesia).
The inclusion of these players is part of Maybank’s commitment to grow and nurture players within the Asean region via the special Asean category in the tournament; the first initiative of its kind on the International Tours’ circuit.
“It has always been Maybank’s aim to provide opportunities for qualified Asean players to stand a chance at competing in a world class event.
“We are proud to provide the platform to ensure professional golfers, especially in countries that we operate across the Asean region will have the opportunity to develop their skills as professionals and gain the experience needed to excel on the global stage,” said Maybank Group President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Abdul Farid Alias in a statement here yesterday.
These players have been selected based on their Asian Tour Order of Merit, Asian Development Tour Order of Merit, World Ranking and local tour Order of Merit in their respective countries (where available).
They will be competing against top Asian and European Tour players, who include world number nine, Henrik Stenson of Sweden and defending champion, Fabrizio Zanotti of Paraguay.
