Feb 28 sentencing for teen mechanic over stolen motorcycle

KOTA KINABALU: A mechanic, who faces a charge of keeping a stolen motorcycle, will know his fate on Feb 28, when the case comes up for sentencing.

Magistrate Afiq Agoes put off the sentencing of 18-year-old Sulaiman Suwandi pending the production of his social report which will be prepared by the Welfare Department as the latter was a young offender.

The undefended accused admitted to having the stolen vehicle belonging to a man aged 37 at Lahad Datu Township at 5pm on January 14.

The alleged offence was framed under Section 411 of the Penal Code which is punishable by a jail term of up to five years and a fine, upon conviction.

The magistrate released the accused on RM2,000 bail with two local sureties, pending disposal of the case and also ordered him to report once in two weeks to the investigat­ing officer of the case.

In a separate case, an unemployed man will be tried on April 29 this year for allegedly assisting in disposing of two stolen car batteries.

The court fixed the date on Lu Yeong Miao, 27, who maintained his plea of not guilty to a charge framed under Section 414 of the Penal Code, when the case came up for case management.

The indictment carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine or both, upon conviction.

Lu was alleged to have committed the offence at a scrap metal shop at Jalan Tuaran between 3pm and 3.30pm on August 26, 2017.
