Do it in Selangor, Penang first before calling for full parking summons waiver – Yong

KOTA KINABALU: Implement the full pardon for motorists committing parking offences in Selangor and Penang first before asking Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) to do so here, said Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah.

Yong was responding to DAP Sabah advisor and Kota Kinabalu MP Jimmy Wong Sze Phin’s call for DBKK to erase all past parking offences committed by motorists and start anew in the spirit of the 18th City Day Celebration.

“If you want us to implement here, why don’t you implement in Selangor or Penang. Selangor and Penang did not even do that,” said Yong, who is also Minister incharge of DBKK.

“We take the effort to inform the people that have an offence to just come forward and pay RM10 for each offence. Some of them accumulate a lot already so we can just do it on that day. It’s actually something good,” he added.

Yong said according to the DBKK by-laws, motorists committing offences and then not paying the fines or compounds would be brought to court.

“But we did not do that so it is the right time to bring it (backdated fines or compounds) to DBKK and only pay the symbolic amount of RM10 for one offence,” he said.

“We do not like to go to court because of the offences. We have no choice, according to the bylaw, we have to go through the procedure.

“We need the law to regulate those guys who are not parking in the proper place. Like double parking here or there,” he explained.

In addition, Yong said the bylaws would make it easier for motorists to find parking spots in the city and deter others from parking their vehicles for long periods of time such as in the past.

He also told the press that discussions and plans to review the coupon parking system rates are not in the DBKK pipelines thus far.

When contact by the Borneo Post, Wong asserted that DBKK should take responsibility for not providing enough parking space in the city for the people instead of charging them expensively for it.
