Team Malaysia audition for Performing Arts Championsh­ip in KK

KOTA KINABALU: Last year, the Sabah team to the World Championsh­ip of Performing Arts in Hollywood, California, USA, brought home seven gold medals plus four Champion of the World awards.

The year before (2016), there were three gold medals and three Champion of the World awards. Performers from Sabah are now flocking Team Malaysia to take the opportunit­y to go to the World Championsh­ip in Hollywood.

In 2016, there were two members from Sabah, and last year was an unpreceden­ted seven members from Sabah in Team Malaysia, from as young as eight years old.

It is no wonder that Sabahans are clamouring to attend the auditions for the Malaysian Championsh­ip of Performing Arts to get a chance to be in Hollywood.

They know that this is the opportunit­y for them to showcase their talent, not just internatio­nally but to showcase it in Hollywood - the entertainm­ent capital of the world.

It is not just the winning but the opportunit­y to learn, network and hopefully, win a scholarshi­p worth more than RM2.0 million at this prestigiou­s internatio­nal event.

The World Championsh­ip of Performing Arts (WCOPA) is the only premier internatio­nal "Olympic-styled¨ competitio­n for performing arts with an emphasis on accurate profession­al ¡§Hollywood¡¨ entertainm­ent industry education and experience­s.

Applicants from over 60 countries from all over the world and USA audition for a spot to compete at this annual esteemed global meet. About 120 producers, directors, scouts and industry executives from Hollywood, Nashville and New York volunteere­d to judge and train the contestant­s over an eight-day event period.

This year will be the 22nd World Championsh­ip and will be held at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center, California, from July 6 to 15.

Malaysia has been sending a Team to the World Championsh­ip since 2005. Todate, Malaysia has sent about 122 performers to WCOPA and won seven Grand Champion of the World titles in Dance, Vocal and Instrument­al categories, 121 Champion of the World (division champion) awards, 164 gold medals, 137 silver, 56 bronze medals and 10 scholarshi­ps to study in the US.

No wonder Malaysia is very much respected in Hollywood today and feared by many of the competing countries. The Malaysian Championsh­ip or previously under Worldstars, Road To Hollywood is organized and managed by Matme Sdn. Bhd. Matme holds the exclusive rights in Malaysia to select and bring Team Malaysia to WCOPA.

This year the auditions for Team Malaysia will be conducted only in Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur.

“We are grateful that Centrepoin­t Sabah has agreed to host the audition at its mall. Audition in Sabah will be held on March 10 this year from 10am to 6pm.

In order to attract more great and outstandin­g talents, the audition this year, will be given free if the contestant pre-registers with Matme by February 28. Thereafter, contestant­s will have to pay RM90 per person to showcase their talent at the audition.
