TM Sabah brings Unifi broadband service to Semporna
SEMPORNA: The high-speed broadband service brought here by Telekom Malaysia Berhad Sabah (TM Sabah) can further boost the development of this area and its people.
Assistant Minister of Finance Datuk Ramlee Marahaban said the efforts undertaken by the government through TM Sabah was timely and in line with the development of this area.
Ramlee said the high-speed broadband service would serve as a catalyst to drive development, including the tourism industry.
He said the service was very valuable to Semporna as it could mean that Semporna was not far behind.
“I initiated the efforts to bring the high-speed broadband service to this area last year after realizing its importance to Semporna and its people.
“We should be thankful as the government always supports efforts towards the development of the socio-economy of the people in the state, including Semporna,” he said at the launching ceremony of the Unifi service for Semporna, yesterday.
According to Ramlee, this service should be utilized by the public, especially traders and small medium enterprises.
Ramlee, who is also the assemblyman for Bugaya, said the service not only provided various information but also opportunities for traders to expand their businesses and generate more income.
Traders and entrepreneurs should go to a higher level including by getting involved in online business which is the current lifestyle, he said.
“People should also grab the opportunity offered in the tourism industry where with this service, various products, services and locations of attractive places could be promoted easily online,” he said.
When met after the launch of the service, Ramlee said as for now, this service would benefit the people in the town area.
However, he said coverage would be expanded to other areas including the islands in Semporna.
“This service provided by TM Sabah is a noble initiative that is in line with the government’s direction and I believe this initiative will help boost the socioeconomic development, especially in Sabah,” he added.
Meanwhile, TM Sabah general manager Sukkuriya Masri in his speech presented by assistant general manager (Consumer Sales Unifi) Arif Lakura, said access to this service in Semporna was the result of efforts undertaken by Ramlee.
He said Ramlee’s vision was that the broadband service was important to ensure that Semporna and its people would not be left behind in the digital world.
Sukkuriya said the programme was among the initiatives undertaken by TM Sabah to provide high speed broadband connectivity to the people to make life and businesses easier.
He said TM had successfully provided 352 home passes in Semporna and there were 25 customers who were currently using Unifi.
“However, not all areas are covered but the coverage of this service will be expanded from time to time according to demand,” he added.
Also present were Semporna District Officer Dr Chacho Bullah, TM senior officials and officers from various government agencies.
