KOTA KINABALU: Firefighters are our unsung heros and their bravery was proven when State Fire and Rescue director Nordin Pauzi put out a fire from a burning ambulance near the Queen Elazabeth Hospital 1 (QEH I) here yesterday.

The incident happened around 7.40 pm when the ambulance was heading to QEH I from Kota Marudu with a patient.

According to Nordin, he was on his way to Sembulan when he saw smoke coming out from the engine of the ambulance.

"I immediately pulled over my car and ran towards the ambulance.

"After making sure the driver, doctor, staff nurse and the patient were out from the ambulance, I removed the oxygen tank that was inside the vehicle to prevent any explosion," he said yesterday.

Nordin said that he then took a fire extinguisher from inside the ambulance and proceeded to douse the flame that was coming out from the engine.

Three minutes later, a fire engine with nine firefighters arrived at the scene to control the situation.

The fire was put out within a minute and the operation ended about 10 minutes later.

None of the medical personnel and patient was injured in the incident.

Although Nordin was praised for his quick action and bravely, he said that was just part of the job of a fire and rescue personnel whether in uniform or when off duty.

"The most important is that no one was injured," he said.
