JOHOR BAHRU: An assistant environmental health officer at the Segamat Municipal Council (MPS) was detained by the Johor branch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday on suspicion of receiving a bribe of RM5,000.

According a source, the detention was made at the Segamat branch of the Johor MACC at about 2.30 pm when the 57-year-old male suspect was giving a statement to assist ongoing investigation.

The source said that from the investigation carried out, the man was believed to have received the bribe from a manager of a programme and event management company in return for the support given to their application to organise a programme in the Segamat district, this year.

In addition, the investigating team from the MACC was believed to have impounded several documents on the programme from a raid on the suspect’s office in Jalan Buluh Kasap, Segamat.

The case was being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009 which provided a fine of five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, and imprisonment of not more than 20 years, upon conviction.

Johor MACC Director Datuk Azmi Alias, when contacted yesterday confirmed the arrest and said that the suspect would be taken to the Segamat Court for a remand order for further investigation.
