36 arrested in swoop on underworld gang

IPOH: Thirty-six suspects have been arrested in a special Ops Cantas Silver 1/2018 for their alleged involvemen­t in murder, robbery, extortion, and drug traffickin­g.

The men, aged between 20 and 60, are allegedly members of an underworld gang.

The suspects were also linked to the murder of a Datin in Taman OUG, Kuala Lumpur on July 6, 2016.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Hasnan Hassan said all arrests were made on Jan 27 in Perak, Selangor, Melaka and Johor to assist in investigat­ions under Section 130V/W of the Penal Code for being a member of and assisting an organised criminal group.

“Investigat­ions have been completed and they will be charged in court on Tuesday (Feb 20),” he said.

Comm Hasnan also said the suspects were remanded for 28 days starting Jan 27 to Feb 24 under Section 4(5) of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

They will also be investigat­ed under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act.

Comm Hasnan said police are still trying to track down a few more suspects.

“They have been listed as wanted individual­s by police. We will also enlist the help of Interpol to detect if any of them have escaped to other countries,” he said.
