Telaga FC win Sabah Unity League Cup

KOTA KINABALU: Telaga FC emerged as the Sabah Unity League Cup 2017 champions on Sunday.

Against Kota Belud’s Putra FC strengthen­ed by former state footballer­s Matlan Marjan and Charles Tindi, Telaga FC were forced to dig deep into their reserves before prevailing 5-4 in the penalty shootout.

The teams were tied 1-1 in regulation time and extra time to force the shootout at the Penampang Stadium.

Telaga FC of Pitas clinched the RM8,000 prize money as champions while the runnersup pocketed RM5,000.

In the Fairplay League title decider held earlier, RRB of Tamparuli were the champions after beating Kiulu Veteran 2-0.

The winners received RM5,000 while the losing finalists settled for RM3,000.

Organised by the Penampang Unity Football Club (PUFC), the tournament that started in August last year with 32 teams participat­ing.

Penampang District Officer Luvita Koisun presented the prizes to the winners at the closing of the tournament.

In her speech, Luvita praised PUFC under its president Richard Jomiji Kinsil for having the annual tournament.

“Credit must be given to Richard and his team for organising football tournament­s in this district not just for the veterans but for all categories as well.

“I fully supported their objectives to enhance and promote the developmen­t of football in Sabah especially among the youth community,” she said.

Towards this end, Luvita also hoped that there will be tournament­s for women too in the future.
