Trio fined for driving under influence of alcohol

KOTA KINABALU: Three persons were fined by the Traffic Court here yesterday for after being charged with driving their vehicles while under the influence of alcohol.

Helen John Alai was fined RM2,000 while Jali Lukas and Michell Shelson were each fined RM1,500.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus imposed the fine on the trio after they pleaded guilty as charged under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The indictment carries a fine of up to RM6,000 or a jail term of up to 12 months, upon conviction.

The magistrate also ordered the accused persons to be jailed for two weeks if they failed to pay their fines.

The prosecutio­n told the court that the accused persons were arrested during an operation in Penampang recently.

In an unrelated case, Bernard Peter was fined a total of RM11,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here for two charges of possessing syabu and cannabis.

The 41-year-old accused was fined after he admitted to both his charges under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

On the first count, he was fined RM8,000, in default, 16 months’ jail and for the second count, he received another RM3,000 fine, in default, eight months’ imprisonme­nt.

The accused was apprehende­d for possessing 0.55 gram of syabu and 0.08 gram of cannabis at a house at Kampung Nambazan in Penampang on January 3.
