TAR UC champions affordable education

-

SINCE its establishment in 1969, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (‘TAR UC’) has become a household name, known for providing quality and affordable education that has transformed the lives of many young Malaysians for close to 5 decades.

This is in line with the mission and vision promulgated by the founding leaders of TAR UC to ensure that TAR UC’s holistic education continues to remain accessible to all Malaysians.

This is made possible by the provision of financial assistance and scholarships to deserving students through the internally and externally administered education funds. One of the financial assistance provided for students is the TAR UC Merit Scholarship.

Since its introduction in 1997, the TAR UC Merit Scholarship has benefitted more than 20,000students and a total of approximately RM100 million has been disbursed to assist the deserving students.

Automatically awarded to outstanding students who are applying to pursue their preuniversity and undergraduate programmes, the scholarship covers up to 100 pct waiver of tuition fee.

Additionally, TAR UC also provides scholarships via internally and externally administered education funds.

Externally administered education funds which are awarded by external organisations or foundations, such as the Kuok Foundation, have their own selection criteria, administrative procedures and terms and conditions.

In terms of internally administered education funds, TAR UC currently has 32 interest-free revolving student loan funds available to provide financial assistance to needy and deserving students to further their education, whereby a total of close to RM31 million worth of student loans have been given out since 1979.

Sabrina Chong, a TAR UC student, is one beneficiary of the scholarship that assists her in pursuing her studies at TAR UC.

Exploring ways to reduce her family’s financial constraint and to fully focus on her studies and co-curriculum activities, Sabrina Chong has always been on the lookout for financial aids and scholarships.

After having stumbled upon the circular for the TAR UC – TAA Scholarship application on TAR UC’s website, she decided to give it a try.

It turned out that she was successful in her application and she became one of the three pioneer recipients of the scholarship, enabling her to advance her studies at TAR UC.

“Thanks to this scholarship, my family’s financial burden is lessened as this scholarship provides financial assistance by paying for both my education as well as living expenses,” she explained.

“It is a very well thought out scholarship and I believe that this scholarship will bring positive change in the community as well as TAR UC students themselves in the future. Moreover, I am thoroughly satisfied with the quality and knowledge of educators and lecturers here at TAR UC.”

Currently enrolled in TAR UC’s Bachelor of Communication (Hons) in Journalism programme, Sabrina aspires to write and publish her own book someday in hopes of inspiring and making an impact on society.

Lim Hang Seng is another individual who was given financial aid to continue his tertiary education journey at TAR UC.

Under the Kuok Foundation Study Grant, he was able to complete his Diploma and continue his Bachelor Degree programme with financial assistance from the Kuok Foundation Undergraduate Awards.

“Being awarded this grant helped lighten my financial burden tremendously as it helps to pay my tuition fees,” he said. “It was not easy for me to work part-time and study at the same time. When I enrolled into my Diploma programme, the Department of Student Affairs helped me get in touch with the Kuok Foundation to apply for the grant so that I could focus on my studies.”

Hang Seng recently graduated from his Diploma in Mass Communication (Public Relations) and is currently in Year 2 of the Bachelor of Public Relations (Hons) programme. In the future, he hopes to make a name for himself in the field of Public Relations.

“In the future, I hope to become a good PR practitioner. It is a challenging field but I believe I can succeed. Studying at TAR UC encourages my passion for learning in my area of study. The lecturers really put in a lot of effort in teaching and guiding us in our studies. Additionally, I have made a lot of friends and I really do enjoy my time here.”
