Maybank International holds 'Tiger Camp' in Labuan
LABUAN: It is no secret that many school children spend too much time with gadgets, in front of the computer or television screen, and have little outdoors activity or interest in the natural world around them.
Nevertheless, said Maybank International Labuan general manager Khairuddin Abdul Rahman, skills like social interaction, self-confidence, a love and respect for nature, healthy living choices could be learned and cemented at camp.
To this end, 62 underprivileged students from six secondary schools here were given the opportunity to participate in a two-day Maybank Tiger Camp at Pulau Papan here.
“It is truly a priceless experience and one every child should have; a chance to enjoy, apart from enhancing their educational knowledge and personal growth,” he told reporters after closing the camp.
Khairuddin said the Tiger Camp programme was one of many initiatives under Maybank International's Cahaya Kasih employee volunteerism programme.
“We hope this programme will greatly benefit the younger communities, as it is not only educational but gives them the opportunity to develop skill and improve their wellbeing in the future,” he said.
During the camp, peninsulabased Effective Learning Activities (ELAS) founder Harun Abu Bakar also conducted a motivational talk emphasising on mental strength, problem solving skills and teamwork.
Other activities during the event were hiking, talent night and team building.
“We believe the core function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically, intelligence plus character is the goal of true education,” Khairuddin added.
Since its introduction, he said, Maybak Cahaya Kasih programme had grown to be a major regional community voluntary programme for the Maybank Group, with education being one of its main pillars.
