‘Tomb Raider’ flick snatches internatio­nal box office crown

LOS ANGELES: Tomb Raider defeated Black Panther at the internatio­nal box office at the weekend as the Warner Bros and MGM action adventure vaulted to the top of the global and internatio­nal charts.

Meanwhile Oscar winner The Shape Of Water crossed US$100 million in total receipts.

Audiences responded strongly to Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander in the role of thrillseek­ing heiress Lara Croft as the action adventure climbed to an early US$102.5 million internatio­nally from the first two weekends. This was powered by US$41.1 million from its first three days in China, where the film delivered Warner Bros’ seventh highest opening weekend.

The worldwide tally including the number two North American debut stands at US$126 million. Ranking number one in most of its internatio­nal markets, Tomb Raider opened on US$4.4 million in Russia some 11 per cent ahead of Wonder Woman, US$4.2 million in the UK, US$3.2 million in France, US$2.15 million in both German and Mexico, US$2.1 million in both Australia and Brazil, US$1.7 million in the UAE some 27 per cent ahead of Wonder Woman, and US$1.6 million in Scandinavi­a.

Spain generated US$1.5 million, Indonesia climbed to US$1.1 million after two weekends, and Holland delivered a US$1 million debut on a par with Wonder Woman. Warner Bros and MGM co-produced Tomb Raider and handle internatio­nal distributi­on jointly.

Crime caper Game Night added US$3.7 million from 51 markets for US$30.5 million and stands at US$5 million after three weekends in the UK, US$4.8 million after four in Australia., and US$2.6 million after three in Germany.

Black Panther added an estimated US$57 million worldwide at the weekend to propel the running total to US$1.183 billion and finished the session as the 14th highest global release in history.

The Marvel Studios release overtook Captain America: Civil War on US$1.153bn and Minions on US$1.159 billion in the global pantheon, while the internatio­nal box office climbed by US$30 million for US$577.1 million and ceded the crown to Tomb Raider.

Black Panther ranks as the fifth highest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) release after it passed Spider-Man 3 on US$554 million, and is approachin­g US$100 million in China as the tally reached US$96 million after 10 days.

The UK has produced US$59.5 million, South Korea US$42.7 million, Brazil US$32.7 million, Australia US$28.1 million, France US$27.2 million, Mexico US$26 million, Germany US$19.2 million, and Russia US$18 million.

Taiwan has delivered US$12.5 million, Indonesia US$12.3 million, Japan US$11.4 million, India US$10.1 million, and Malaysia US$10 million.
