Alvin, Chlestie win best sportsman, sportswoman awards
KOTA KINABALU: Focus and determination were the keys to success for Alvin Roland who was crowned best Sportsman at the MSSS Track and Field Meet 2018 here, yesterday.
The 16-year-old from Ranau was crowned the best male athlete in the Under-18 category. He won the award for his achievement in the long jump with a new record of 14.99m. The previous record that was set back in 2010 was 14.95m.
Alvin said he trains regularly and that discipline helps to keep him on track of achieving his goals. But most importantly, he said it was focus and determination that helped him to win the award.
“Regular training is very important but mostly I just do my best to stay focused on my goals. If there is determination, we can achieve anything,” he said when met at the Likas Stadium here, yesterday.
Meanwhile, Chlestie Ann Jalisa won the Sportswoman award after she won two gold medals and one silver in the 2,000m steeplechase, 800m and 1,500m respectively.
The 17-year-old lass from SMK Bandau, Kota Marudu said that confidence in her own abilities helped her to try and be the best in her events.
She set a new record in the 2,000m steeplechase by shaving 17 seconds off the old record of 8:46.20s.
When asked what she plans to do after this, Chlestie said she would likely continue training to try and be better in her events.
“I want to do better than what I can do now so I might continue training after SPM. We will see,” she said.
It is not yet certain if the two athletes would be included in the Sabah squad for the upcoming Malaysia Games which is happening in Perak in September.
For the record, Tawau were overall champions with 19 gold medals, 10 silver and two bronze. Keningau were second (12g-11s5b), while Ranau were third (10g16s-14b).
