Tawau bag MSSS athle cs overall tle

Tawau were crowned as overall champions of the Sabah Schools Sports Council (MSSS) Track and Field Meet, which concluded at the Likas Stadium, yesterday.

KOTA KINABALU: Tawau were crowned as overall champions of the Sabah Schools Sports Council (MSSS) Track and Field Meet, which concluded at the Likas Stadium here, yesterday.

The contingent bagged 19 gold medals, 10 silver and two bronze, while in second place were Keningau with 12 gold medals, 11 silver and five bronze.

Ranau were third (10g-16s14b), followed by Kota Marudu in fourth place (6-5-9) and Lahad Datu in fifth spot (6-43), while Kota Kinabalu were sixth (5-7-8).

The 50th edition of the annual championsh­ip became the perfect platform for athletes to shine. A total of 19 new records were set in this golden jubilee meet, which involved 24 district contingent­s from all over Sabah.

Three age groups were contested throughout the four-day competitio­n and Tawau topped four out of six categories which included boys and girls Under-12, boys and girls Under-15 and men and women Under-18.

Tawau were champions in the men's U-18 (three golds and three silvers), boys' U-15 (6g-4s), boys' U-12 (4g) and girls' U-12 (3g-1s-1b), while Keningau won the women's U-18 (6g, 1s) and girls' U-15 (4-g-1s-1b).

Halimatul Saadiah Mohammed Raja became Tawau's most outstandin­g athlete. She won the Sportswoma­n award in the U-15 category for her achievemen­ts in the 100m and 200m hurdles.

In the 200m hurdles, Halimatul clocked 28.05s to erase the previous best time of 29.26s, while in the 100m hurdles she notched 14.77s which was almost one second better than the previous record of 15.59s.

Tawau also bagged the Sportsman and Sportswoma­n awards for the Under-12 category, through Amirul M. Yusof and Nur Amirah Qistina Daim.

They both got a record to their name from winning the 80m hurdles for boys and girls respective­ly.

The Sportsman award for the U-15 category went to Mohd Azri Pirasa from Kudat. He broke the record in the 400m and won gold in the 800m.

The main winners of the Sportsman and Sportswoma­n awards were Alvin Roland and Chlestie Ann Jalisa from Ranau and Kota Marudu respective­ly (see separate story).

Sabah Education deputy director Datuk Dr Mohd Kassim Mohd Ibrahim represente­d Malaysian Education directorge­neral Datuk Dr Amin Senin in the closing ceremony.

Also present were Sabah Education Human Capital Developmen­t sector chief Datu Jamigul Datu Salin, Kota Kinabalu District Education officer-cum-organising chairman Umin Sadi and his deputy Gani Senang.
